Spartan 300 was a 2014 American action film written and directed by Zachary Snyder. It is based on Frank Miller's graphic novel Xerxes: The Fall of the House of Darius and the Rise of Alexander, but does not follow Miller's narrative. 300 hits theaters in March 2007, a year after Zack Snyder's historical epic "300," a movie that was initially banned in Turkey for its depiction of the Turkish army during World War I. Seeing how "300" became an international hit opened up opportunities for other filmmakers to tap into the lucrative comic book market, so there were several other similar films released in 2008-2010 with varying levels of quality. Spartan is another one of those films, released during the same time as "The Legend of Hercules" and "300: Rise of an Empire." But it seems like this is a more direct adaptation of Frank Miller's graphic novel, as opposed to Zack Snyder's stylized version. Set in ancient Greece, Spartan tells the story of three mercenaries from Iberia bent on revenge against King Leonidas' family for killing their father. The leader of the mercenaries, Nasir (Daniel Sharman), doesn't speak a single word throughout the movie so it's not entirely clear if he has a vendetta against Leonidas or if he just wants to steal gold from Sparta. Some other mercenaries are also along for the ride, including Gryphon (Jerrold Freeman), the team's weapons specialist. The three mercenaries, all named after animals because they are animals, are forced to join King Leonidas' army when the king needs help against Xerxes' massive Persian army. Tabizo (Amaury Nolasco) is a Spartan chieftain who is in love with Leonidas' sister Gorgo (Ella Taylor), but he feels unhappy that his love for her has led to him being ostracized by his own people. He has nothing to lose, so he joins the army and swears allegiance to Leonidas. As they prepare for war, Gorgo tries to convince Leonidas that the Persians will spare his people if he surrenders. She says that she has a plan that will save Sparta, but Leonidas just tells her that it would be a disgrace for a Spartan king to surrender. The King's Right Hand Yalius (Michael Jai White) is also in love with Gorgo and plans on taking over the kingdom once the war is over. He doesn't believe in her "surrender plan," but he is willing to go along with it if it means keeping her happy. The Persians are led by the evil Commander Orisus, who was ordered to kill his own family when he was a child so that he would obey Xerxes. He is also in love with Gorgo. I'm guessing that half of these characters aren't actual historical figures, but they're all kinda loosely based on them in some way. It's just hard to say, because the movie doesn't go into much detail about their origins or their motivations. Years ago, King Leonidas' father wanted to make peace with the Persians, but the king's adviser Orestes manipulated things so that he could take over Sparta by falsely accusing Leonidas' father of treason. eccc085e13
